What is the metaphysics which underlies the act of stealing road signs by teenagers in the last century?

Is it an early strike against an alien, thus perceived hostile, world, by those who have newly acquired an adult's body strength? Or is it the erosion of the traditional societal structures which leave those teenagers' soul in want, so they go out in an endeavor to obtain some small part of the world to themselves, though in a non sensical way?

I intuitively assumed it was about possession, in the sense that motivated Ted Bundy but in a far smaller intensity. The idea of taking something and possessing it, displaying it in your bedroom. "I own this sign. It used to be someone else's, now it is mine. I accomplished this". A sense of satisfaction arises!

I disagree with the widely accepted theory that it is a frataphobic manifestation, intended to rid a town of locals. I think Harold came up with that theory. Fuck Harold.
