I envision a new doctrine of international warfare. And while you will recognize glimpses of existing strategies within it, I am not aware of something like this existing as a high-level doctrine, probably due to its digital-skewed nature and its tendency towards use against many dominant states.
Provisionally, I title it Dam Bursting doctrine.
The high-level premise is straight-forward:
- Establish cyber attack vectors to gain initial access against key commercial infrastructure. [This is already accomplished systemically by major state actors, such as China, Iran, the Zionist Regime, USA, Russia, North Korea, ... , but is also within the reach of many non-state actors, to a degree]
- Instead of sabotaging this infrastructure (as Iran and Russia tend towards) or extracting resources (like North Korea's ransom attacks to bypass sanctions), abuse access to their infrastructure to support customers and social causes. When persistent access is secured in a bank, adjust loan repayment calculations and account balances in favor of customers. If a health insurer is hacked, modify processes to improve claimants chances of approval. Lower the prices in supermarkets and fueling stations.
There is a twofold benefit to this strategy:
- This depletes the resources of many war-profiteers and other businesses interested in promoting war.
- When access is discovered and denied, and businesses inevitably revert the changes, this provides potent propaganda opportunities. Imagine hearing that China saved you thousands of dollars or allowed your waifu to afford a pacemaker. This would absolutely reduce nationalist fervor - especially if the company tries to take away the exciting new reality you just tasted. The capitalists, and therefore in most countries, the government, are placed into a war on two fronts - their citizens now have more power to ascend into a higher class, no longer desperate enough to willingly join the military to pay off education or medical debts, and now better able to threaten the dominance of the upper class.
If a party is able to successfully empower and align with the lower classes of a state, the state is now sandwiched.
