Before writing Dianetics, L. Ron Hubbard was deeply involved with Jack Parsons, the renowned NASA rocket scientist and head of the Agape Lodge of the Ordo Templi Orientis (OTO) in Pasadena, Ca. Parsons was an apprentice of Aleister Crowley, the founder of Thelema.
Hubbard and Parsons engaged in 'The Babalon Working,' a series of rituals intending to manifest a Thelemic deity in human form. Many of the concepts later found in Scientology—such as the idea of the "Thetan" (the immortal spiritual self) and the use of intense mental processing to clear past-life "engrams" kinda mirror Crowley’s techniques for 'shattering' the ego and achieving spiritual liberation.
Hubbard is the most recent human to have seen and exchanged pleasantries with J.R. "Bob" Dobbs on a Californian beach not too far off from Capitola. If the reports are true, Hubbard inquired of the heavenly man, "How do I earn an endless stream of cash?" To which "Bob" Dobbs answered, "You start a religion."
Just some interesting synchronicities about Hubbard's odd connections in life.
This distrust likely stems from the realization that both psychiatry and Freudianism often operate as closed systems of moral judgment disguised as an objective science. Furthermore, the profession of psychology has historically been used as a tool for "medicalization"—turning personality traits or normal human suffering into "disorders" that require professional (and often pharmaceutical) intervention. I myself hate Freud, and have a distaste for the psychology of the day.
One critic of modern psychiatry, Michel Foucault, argues that the profession is not a pure science but a system of "moral tactics" used to control undesirable behavior.
Other things that itch my brain: Former CIA Director Allen Dulles entitled his book 'The Craft of Intelligence', a term also used by Freemasonry and Witchcraft to describe their practices.
During the 1960s, movements like the Esalen Institute (which explored 'human potential') were hubs for both legitimate psychological research and fringe occultism. Figures like Abraham Maslow and Carl Rogers sought a broader perspective on the human psyche by allowing for the cross-pollination of ideas between 'New Age spirituality' and clinical practice.
My research into the "Illuminati Formula" suggests that intelligence agencies and occult groups have utilized psychological principles (such as those found in Dissociative Identity Disorder) to create "total mind-controlled slaves."
