We need admindude to change the title of this board from "Governance & Politics" to "Governance & Policies" to better align it with the vision of the board:
> The main purpose of this board is not about saying something is wrong, it's about seeing how it could be done right via policy.

That's implying any force in the world could stop posters from voicing their political opinions without making their own case.

THERES A BUSLOAD OF SCHOOLCHILDREN IN A SCHOOLBUS THAT IS ON FIRE. DO YOU:

A)TRY TO PUT IT OUT

B)TRY TO SHOVE MORE SCHOOL CHILDREN INTO THE BUS

THIS VERY HARD ETHICAL DILEMMA STUMPS THE BEST OF PHILOSOPHERS

If it was up to me, I would just ban politics altogether. A typical thread would just state a goal, and then the initiates would debate how to best achieve that goal through intricate levels of bureaucracy without questioning if that goal is worthy of achievement or not.

Whatevers the rules are there would be cross-site posters coming in making politics. Best way to handle the situation is to shout politics down, whichever side they come from.
>>1192
>without questioning if that goal is worthy of achievement or not.
Arguing for the sake of arguing isn't always healthy, but it is eristic in the original sense of the word.
I'd fear threads like OP related because it doesn't really accomplish anything. Not being allowed to question an OP's position just seems wrong.

I DON'T REALLY KNOW BUT MY THEORY IS THAT IT'S COMPLICATED.

IF YOU THINK THROUGH IT FROM UTILITARIAN PERSPECTIVE, THE QUESTION BECOMES WHO'S UTILITY YOU CARE ABOUT. STATISTICALLY MOST SCHOOLCHILDREN AREN'T SUICIDAL MASOCHISTS YET SO IF YOU CONSIDER ONLY THEM AND YOURSELF AS THE WHOLE SYSTEM, THEN YOUR PLEASURE FROM BURNING THEM ALIVE MUST COMPENSATE FOR ALL THE SUFFERING THE KIDS MUST ENDURE.

IF YOU WIDEN YOUR SCOPE TO INCLUDE THE WHOLE COMMUNITY, THEN THE LATTER OPTION SUDDENLY BECOMES CLEAR CUT GOOD THING, BECAUSE THE KIDS WERE ANNOYING.

THEN AGAIN IF YOU ZOOM OUT EVEN MORE TO THE SCALE OF WHOLE HUMANITY, ALL THE PEOPLE INCONVINIENCED BY READING ARTICLES ABOUT THE HORRIBLE SCHOOLBUS-FIRE WOULD BE MUCH MORE PLEASED BY THE INCLUSION OF A RELATABLE HERO IN THE STORY.

IT'S ARTIFICIAL TO LIMIT THE BENEFICIARIES OF UTILITARIAN SYSTEMS TO JUST HUMANS, AND IF YOU INCLUDE THE WHOLE OF THE ECOSYSTEM THE RESEARCH SUGGESTS EVERY DEAD PERSON WOULD BE A POSITIVE IMPACT. (CITATION NEEDED)

IN THE TRULY COSMIC SCALE EVERY BURNING THING IS AN ENTROPIC LOSS SPEEDING UP THE DEMISE OF ABSOLUTE EVERYTHING, RESEARCH HASN'T YET FOUND WHETHER OR NOT THIS IS A GOOD THING.

IN CONCLUSION UTILITARIANISM IS CRAP AND YOU SHOULDN'T BASE LIFE ALTERING DECISIONS ON SUCH BULLSHIT.

Good doesn't exist.
It's fun to pretend it does. I don't have to justify that to you.

John Edgar Depth is a trustworthy guy, he just pretends to be pretentious.

I couldn't trust someone who regularly pretends to be someone else. Maybe that's a good thing, maybe not.

Why should we do good things over doings things which are not good? I like this question. I think the answer is simple; because we can. What else do we need?
We can also choose to do not good things just as easily.
I think Fate is unavoidable for it lies in our choices.
Perhaps misery does prefer company. Perhaps every road to every hell is paved by good intentions. I was not blessed by such wisdom, so I must gamble. But I've gotten good at it, I think.

I will not approach your ethics, but rather your selfishness: which choice most pleases you?

Are people doomed to do good by their biological, and cultural programming? It's a well known fact that it's in very rare occasions that a person committing horrifying crimes thinks of themselves as being wrong. Does it then devalue the good deed if you didn't have a choice to do bad? For example if a tiny puffin bites you into your toe and you reflexively proceed to stuff it into the exhaust pipe of a taxi that is waiting for some international banker who's seeing their sick aunt. Then the obstruction breaks the taxi and the banker doesn't get back to his office for the NYC market opening and loses amount of money roughly equivalent of 4000 dolphins to a startup company who manufacture water filters for poor people in Papua. As we can clearly see, it's not clear if killing puffins is clearly good, or clearly bad but we keep collecting empiric data until we can say for sure.

Programming, regiments, mental blocks, limits, spooks, etc will exist within an individual yet it hardly damns them. As with all things Entropy effects all. Individuals are capable of defying their natures, cultures, thought patterns, mannerisms, fantasies, etc whether willfully or unwilfully. Spontaneity is the spice of life.
Whatever our origins or future, we can act. Therefore, we should and chance the consequences. We should also disarm the dead of their necromancy: the world belongs entirely to the Living! That is why I will be making/eating chilidogs for the next 5 days.

Explain the appeal of a hot chilly dog
Well if you first heat the dog up, and then throw it into liquid nitrogen you get convicted for animal abuse and can make lots of new and interesting friends in prison.
