Is there a bigger scam than marriage?

For real, it’s this invisible leash society keeps pretending is noble, but it’s been quietly rotting everything from the inside out.

People get pressured into it, lose their individuality, and start living for an image instead of themselves. Families become transactional, love turns into obligation, and resentment festers under the surface. It’s like mass emotional containment disguised as “tradition”, and, when the inevitable collapse happens - divorces, custody battles, cheating - the fallout doesn’t just wreck people, it poisons entire communities. Marriage doesn’t hold societies together anymore; it just keeps everyone pretending things aren’t already broken.

Marriage is most likely the oldest human institution. It probably predates language, even. It is perfectly natural and desirable for people to have Their Person. Some people have a weird idea that women are property, and call their women "wives", but that's not what marriage is at the core.

All of the problems you listed are due to divorce. Is divorce, of such frequency and negativity, an indelible aspect of marriage? I don't think so. It is a product of hyper-individualist ideology. If you chase your own pleasure, and are unwilling to change to accommodate another person in your life, then of course they're going to stop loving you.
I suspect that as women become liberated, marriage may well wither away.
The only reason I can see to continue it is the idea that a pregnant woman or child should have some level of support, and in an individualist society where the community and the state are unlikely to raise a child, marriage seems like a valid coping mechanism.
Marriage is a financial agreement. It's about nothing other than money and property. It has absolutely nothing to do with love or romance - quite the opposite, in fact. The institution of marriage was created solely so that women would be enshrined into law as the property of their husbands. Marriage is the complete opposite of romance. Why would I want to get the government involved in my relationship? Getting married is the ultimate NPC move.

One of the biggest reasons why I've never dated anyone is because I am so absolutely repulsed by the thought of getting married. I want a real romantic relationship where I'm in love with someone forever. I don't want to be anyone's property or the government's property.

Abolition of the marriage! Even the most radical flare up at this infamous proposal of the Discordians.

It's very sad that you feel that way.

I know many couples that I consider married, that have lived together for decades, but who have no formal marriage certificate or the like. That is an option to you.
Perhaps it is because marriage predates and even supercedes the concepts of the state and private property. But who am I to say.

Marriage is a legal concept made for tax write-offs.
No one can prevent me from pledging my love or hand or heart to whomever I choose!
(Naturally I can "marry" 3 people.)
